Lone Rock Beach Campground is a large primitive campsite located on the shores of Wahweap Bay and adjacent to Lone Rock, a large isolated redrock formation. The permit is free, and if you camp frequently, save the permit as it is valid for one year, and accepted at most Northern California national forests, as well as some in Southern California.From US Highway 50, east of Placerville, travel for 21 miles to Ice House Road turnoff on your left. Access to Lone Rock Campground can be by foot or bike from either Jones Fork parking lot (0.3 miles) or Sunset Boat Launch Ramp (0.7 miles).

Once you set up tent you’ll be drinking in the sights of the ruggedly beautiful Sierra Nevada mountain range all day long. When we went to Lone Rock we had the entire campground to ourselves, the other campgrounds in the area were also not heavily used, and even the lake was pretty quiet, with only a few boats on it. We suspect that this is due to the location, as it is take nearly four hours to get to it from the San Francisco peninsula, and Lake Tahoe, which is a more popular boating destination, is only 45 minutes to an hour further up the road. Reservations are not accepted for Lone Rock Campground and all campsites are first-come/first-served. Also, Lone Rock is only accessible via a quarter-mile walk or by boat, so that may also help to keep the crowds down at the campground.All of the campsites at Lone Rock are visible from the other campsites, which is one of the reasons we like Lone Rock when it is not busy.
