It’s filled with people who leave their trash everywhere, there’s no shade so be prepared for that, no one even tells you about the swampy part where you have to go through trees that cover everything that looks like the scene from Snow White which isn’t a compliment. The road there was closed. Butcher Jones features a pleasant nature trail and a gently sloping beach which makes safe, gradual changes in depths adjacent to picnic area.
Trail is narrow, rocky in a few spots and lined with cactus.

Trail gets more difficult based on which cove you end up at. Weather. if you don’t go basically at the crack of dawn don’t go at all cause then you’ll basically walking through the desert. If you go within a few days after it rains, expect there to be mud a half a mile in. Lots of cactus and trees in the path in places so would recommend wearing long pants. We only hiked 2 miles in as we wanted to stay by the water. Butcher Jones Recreational Area truly has a little bit of everything. Butcher Jones Trail 463 provides access to some choice vantage points from which to catch a bird’s-eye view of the lake. The first 1/4 mile to Peregrine Point is paved to provide for wheelchair access.

Dog friendly, kid friendly— just watch out for the trail edges as they have quite a bit of cacti to accidentally step on! There’s snakes and this is definitely not kid or dog friendly if you take your kids or pets you should be ashamed of yourself. I love taking the family there that way we can enjoy some time splashing in saguaro lake.
