The off-highway portion begins and ends near Halls Crossing on Utah Highway 276 and travels to within a couple of miles of the pioneer crossing of the Colorado River (now Lake Powell). The Hole in the Rock Trail (often hyphenated as Hole-in-the-Rock) is a historic trail running east-southeast from the town of Escalante in southern Utah in the western United States. Mileages indicated do not allow for side trips.

Hole in the Rock marks the only at which early pioneers could descend to the Colorado River below with their wagons and animals. There are other sections of the Hole-in-the-Rock trail on the east side of Lake Powell as well, where the expedition's journey continued. You’ll find one of them at Papago Park, which is also one of our five recommended areas for beginning hikers. But for an outdoor adventure closer to home, the Phoenix area has some special spots of its own that you need to see.
The trail is to the right and is easier to follow above the high water mark. This 62 mile (100 km) drive (one way) runs from Escalante, Utah to the Hole-in-the-Rock on the western shore of Lake Powell following the general route of of the original Hole-in-the-Rock Expedition.
This trail is suitable for full size or long wheelbase rigs except the newly cut section of trail near the north end, see description below. Reset the odometer at the mileage sign on the Hole in the Rock road (0.3 miles from the highway), and travel down the Hole in the Rock road.

Description: The Hole-in-the-Rock Trail is a very short natural dirt and step path that wraps around Hole-in-the-Rock Butte to a large viewing hole in the butte. After approximately 4 miles the road will make a hairpin turn and start up hill. After another 1.6 miles the road makes another hairpin turn to the left. Look for the trail marker for 4W334 on the right. There are also some really cool sandstone formations here to check out.The new section of trail (indicated in red on the supplied map) is very very tight in the trees. Even with our Jeeps we had to make multiple point turns to get through and still managed to scrape the bullbar on a few trees. This section of trail IS NOT SUITABLE FOR FULL SIZE OR LONG WHEELBASE RIGS!The trail starts off from a switchback on the FS-9718 road with a gradual hill climb up to the top of Nelson hill. At one point just after the start of the trail in takes a short descent into a gully and up the other side which is quite steep, there are two paths the right side being a bit steeper than the left. Hole in the Rock Trail is often confused with the Hole in the Rock Road, the 56 mile maintained dirt road leaving Scenic Highway 12 at Escalante, which follows the first portion of this same trail blazed by the San Juan Mission in 1879 to the now impassable Hole in the Rock road cut.
