About four years into sobriety, he stopped just living in the moment and took time to reflect on the impact he had."When [Predators GM] David Poile called me into his office at the end of training camp to congratulate me [for making the team], I had a few tears," Tootoo said.
He scored 10 goals, had 5 assists, and sat for 72 PIM ranking 55th most penalty points in the NHL. That following year, he cracked the Predators roster and represented Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships, winning silver.But Tootoo's eight years sober haven't been easy.So far, he's made stops in Lloydminster, Saskatoon, Nain, Natuashish and Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation.It was only recently that Tootoo realized the impact he had on Indigenous youth in Canada. The Brandon Wheat Kings selected him in the 3rd round of the 1998 WHL Bantam Draft. Following successful completion of the program, he returned to finish the season and play in the 2011 Stanley Cup playoffs.As a free agent on July 5, 2016, Tootoo left the Devils to sign a one-year contract with the Chicago Blackhawks.
