I always had a desire to live and work in Vancouver but only got work opportunity in Toronto. Rent prices seems comparable, though the building you get in Vancouver seems older and not as nice. The city of Vancouver is a "small town" (about 700K people) compared to the city of Toronto (2.5 mill) although Vancouver has a generally higher cost of living - particularly housing which is comparable in affordability terms to bigger cosmopolitan cities such as Hong Kong, or London. Costs of living in Toronto is 5% more than Vancouver. You can change the amount in this calculation. Like by virtue of offering something that Vancouver & Toronto can't/won't, I wonder if it won't even matter how shortsighted its leadership is if it might still manage to attract a lot of people from elsewhere who will in turn strengthen the economy (albeit without the extreme growth of o&g boom years).
Anecdotally, I believe we have a higher ratio of buildings built within the past 20 years than Toronto, especially downtown. Also, not only is there a bigger gap between wages and housing cost in Van, but I found groceries to be quite a bit cheaper in Toronto, even in the posh neighbourhoods. Among the most expensive things about living here are housing (see below for budgets in our FAQ), transportation is expensive with a monthly Toronto Transit pass costing $160. I don't think your assessment of Vancouver's buildings being older/not as nice is correct though. I'll be honest, I don't think I ever heard anyone said they hate Vancouver lol.
