If you go within a few days after it rains, expect there to be mud a half a mile in. Please remember, pack it in, pack it out! if you don’t go basically at the crack of dawn don’t go at all cause then you’ll basically walking through the desert. Perhaps it would be better another time of the year. There’s snakes and this is definitely not kid or dog friendly if you take your kids or pets you should be ashamed of yourself. Great hilly trail that provides gorgeous views of Suguaro Lake and wild flowers.Amazing trail! which was excellently navigated/narrated by Chicago native Captain Ken.

Push past it- might not be the best for dogs (unless you don’t mind a muddy dogo). The trails have definitely been more crowded (and unfortunately more littered) lately. Its an easy trail with beautiful views of Four Peak, Saguaro Lake, and the Arizona landscape. Probably one of my favorites.

It’s filled with people who leave their trash everywhere, there’s no shade so be prepared for that, no one even tells you about the swampy part where you have to go through trees that cover everything that looks like the scene from Snow White which isn’t a compliment. Bring sunscreen, water, and pack a lunch/snack- there’s a lot of great places to take a break and enjoy the views. There is a Shell and Circle K on E. Shea Boulevard off of AZ 87. Bottom line: hiking/boat tour = 5 stars. Dog friendly, kid friendly— just watch out for the trail edges as they have quite a bit of cacti to accidentally step on!Looove this trail especially in the fall, winter, and spring! Trail is narrow, rocky in a few spots and lined with cactus. The great thing about this trail is that you maintain a view of the lake through out most of the trail. Great little day trip from Chandler, LOVED the Butcher Jones hiking trail, water was c-c-c-old, but so beautiful in the middle of the desert.

Butcher Jones Trail [CLOSED] is a 7.9 kilometer heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Tortilla Flat, Arizona that features a lake and is rated as moderate. They can be purchased from a gas station for $8. Trailhead: take the North Bush Highway a half hour out of the north end of Mesa and turn right just after the Saguaro Lake Marina; the trailhead is two miles down the road at the Butcher Jones Recreation Site . Question: Who was Butcher Jones, and why is a trail named after him near Saguaro Lake? Highlight was definitely the Desert Belle boat tour (cheaper/no fees to purchase tickets here on TripAdvisor, FYI!) Well marked in and out trail with great views of the lake. Not too difficult of a hike and the perfect way to start your day — especially if you plan spending the rest of the day by the lake! Tons of interesting information, just enough humor, great vibe, super nice @ 5PM so you catch a bit of the sunset from the boat. $12 Tonto National Forest daily pass required.

The trail is only one way in and out and it’s ugly don’t know how else to describe it. It’s not worth it unless you like looking at beer cans, circle k cups and cactus for more then 2 miles cause the trail itself is actually 4. and be prepared to get pricked by at least a few plants because that’s how narrow it is.
